Palin’s appearance on Bill O’Reilly’s Fox News Factor show, July 9, 2010, where he conducted an “interview” with her on how she would handle illegal immigration as president. Many have commented on Palin’s responses, running the gamut from ‘trainwreck’, to ‘she showed restraint when constantly interrupted by a rude and bombastic host.’ One observer calculated the number of interruptions committed by O’Reilly in the 104-or-so seconds of the interview at 12 times. That’s not an interview, that’s a grilling! Face it viewers, O’Reilly appeared determined not to let his guest get their point across and he was out for a smack down. In that same appearance, Palin was also criticized for critiquing Ronald Reagan’s approach to illegal immigration as failed not because of the perils of amnesty, but because of his decision to try to work with the Democrats. Reagan’s pretty good conservative instincts aside, you can’t always outguess your enemies, especially when they are good at playing possum. And few would dispute her criticism today, given the congress’s approval rating is at around 19%, on a charitable day? So we could safely extrapolate from that criticism what would be her policy as president: no amnesty. In addressing the [...]

There has been a bit of a brouhaha in the friendly blogosphere regarding Gov.

In addressing the illegal immigration issue in any format, much less in an over-steered, 104 seconds of interruptions, common sense tells you that you don’t throw out whatever comes to mind, or attempt to outgun the host. You keep your cool and carefully try to interject your responses, especially knowing the media will use anything you say to intimidate and score against your missteps. That is exactly what Gov. Palin did. Given she was up against an obstreperous host, she managed to inject her approach as president for combating illegal immigration:

Build and maintain the border wall.

Don’t make deals with progressive Democrats regarding border security/amnesty.

Meet with the governors of each border state to organize sending a certain number of troops to secure our country’s borders.

Require those here illegally to register.

Keep going Sarah. The road to the White House is fraught with these kinds of brow-beating “interviews”. Consider it practice in dealing with a French poodle named O’Reilly.
