As we approach the 100 anniversary of Ronald Reagan’s birth this February 6th, Sarah Palin has a wonderful tribute to Ronald Wilson Reagan, the 40th President of the United States (1981–1989) and the 33rd Governor of California (1967–1975) in USA Today.
One of Ronald Reagan’s earliest jobs was as a lifeguard on the Rock River in Illinois, where he saved the lives of 771 grateful people. As Reagan ascended to the presidency, I remember on the eve of his inauguration how the long hostage stand-off with Iran was suddenly over. We all watched as Reagan brought new life and promise back into our demoralized, debt-ridden nation. Although some may take issue with Reagan’s policies, such as how he handled illegal immigration, he never mishandled his responsibility as Commander-in-Chief of America, where he sincerely sought to represent and protect the interests of Americans as the country went about its business of making a living.
I snatched this excerpt from “Palin on Reagan: He was ‘America’s lifeguard”…
“The image of the lifeguard seems to represent what Reagan was to America and to the freedom-loving people of the world. He lifted our country up at a time when we were in the depths of economic, cultural and spiritual malaise. We were told that we must accept that the era of American greatness was over; but with his optimism and common sense, President Reagan held up a mirror to the American soul to remind us of our exceptionalism.” — Sarah Palin
