As Sarah Palin put it last week in Calgary, we shouldn’t put our faith in politicians because they will always let us down, and the crowd laughed as if to say, “no kidding!” Then she wisely asserted that our faith should be in ideas.

In other words, we can reliably navigate the rocky waters of history by the ancient lights of the Declaration of Independence or even the old Canadian Bill of Rights because they represent the wisdom of the ages. We should not be so easily enamoured by the latest smooth-talking politicians, pulled as they are between self and public interest.

Yes, those ideas were ultimately packaged up by politicians, but only after the people had debated and digested them and found them agreeable. She went on to explain the ideas behind the Tea Party movement that is now cracking the foundations of both the Republican Party and the grand plans of President Obama.
